the shrinkage of the Caspian Sea

28th November 2023

I visited the Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan to document the shrinkage of the Caspian Sea. According to a forthcoming report by Kazakhstan’s Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology, the Caspian Sea is approaching the lowest level of 29 metres below sea level, recorded in 1977. In June, the local Aktau authority declared a state of emergency over the critically low level of the sea. My full reportage, words and photos, have been published on a lovely photos essay on the Guardian.
Thanks to the local activities and scientists which showed me around @azamat_sarsenbayev @asselbaimukanova
